How can an orchestra perform in perfect harmony while playing each instrument in a different physical location?

Leveraging 5G Standalone Core Network for Ultra-Low Latency Live Networked Music Performance

The Problem

Breaking Geographic Barriers in Musical Collaboration

Traditional music collaboration is limited by physical proximity, restricting artistic opportunities and cultural exchange. Musicians face challenges in collaborating across distances, leading to increased costs, scheduling conflicts, and limited access to diverse talent.

These geographical constraints hinder creative possibilities and cross-cultural musical innovation. Technically, networked music performance faces significant latency challenges. For synchronous play, the audio round-trip time should be less than 30 milliseconds - equivalent to sound traveling 10.3 meters in a concert hall. Traditional networks introduce multiple latency sources, making seamless long-distance musical collaboration extremely difficult to achieve.

The Solution

5G Standalone Core Network and Specialized Musical Equipment

Telenor Research has developed a Next Generation platform, a 5G experimentation facility based on a state-of-the-art multi-vendor cloud-native 5G standalone core network.

This platform, compliant with 3GPP Release 16, utilizes the service-based architecture of 5G. The system incorporates edge computing for audio and video processing, combining all inputs into a common scene for delivery to a live audience. A stream selector network application offers low-latency video gateway capabilities, acting as a network video switching matrix.

The Results

Pushing the Boundaries of Remote Musical Collaboration

While the current implementation shows promise, it is not yet optimal for all types of music or performers. However, it has proven effective for some improvised music and skilled musicians.

The system demonstrates potential for remote collaboration with significantly reduced latency, opening new possibilities for distributed performances and rehearsals. It also enables Network Music Performance (NMP) in non-permanent locations, expanding the reach of this technology.

The Value Proposition

Pioneering the Future of Networked Music Performance

This 5G-powered solution revolutionizes remote musical collaboration, offering musicians and institutions the potential to overcome geographical barriers.

It provides high guaranteed bit rates and network slicing at lower costs, increasing accessibility for less well-known artists and low-resource music venues. Beyond entertainment, this technology acts as a proxy for other use cases benefiting from specialized media capabilities, such as smart villages and emergency services scenarios, showcasing the versatility of 5G in high-demand, low-latency applications.
