What if future infrastructure can
help protect our democracy?
Around the world, democratic systems are under pressure. From the spread of disinformation to declining trust in institutions, and many of the challenges facing democracies today are amplified by technology.
So how can infrastructure support democracy? We believe in a future where infrastructure is designed to enhance transparency, security, public engagement, and election security. And we believe the key to making this happen is though effective partnerships.
In recent years, the rapid spread of disinformation has become one of the most visible threats to democracy. False or misleading content often travels faster than reliable information, particularly on social media platforms where algorithms prioritize engagement. At the same time, emerging technologies such as deepfakes and AI-generated content are making it harder for citizens to distinguish fact from fiction. Advanced AI systems are already being developed to identify coordinated disinformation campaigns, flag inauthentic accounts, and spot misleading content before it reaches wide audiences. To make these tools effective, collaboration between governments, independent researchers, and technology platforms will be essential.
Other areas to explore is how to secure election infrastructure against hacking and other digital threats, as well as give citizens better access to government data, allowing them to track public spending, review legislative proposals, and better understand how decisions are made.
We also believe strengthening digital literacy is a long-term investment that can help societies become more resilient to misinformation and polarization.
Ultimately, technology’s impact on democracy will depend on how it is governed and applied. By investing in collaborative solutions, ethical standards, and greater transparency, democracies have an opportunity to use technology not just to respond to today’s challenges, but to build more open, participatory, and resilient digital infrastructure for the future.
Let’s join forces to make it happen.
